Our name, and our vision
From the very beginning, we were drawn to the idea of preservation. This, in turn, led us to think of salt—one of the world's oldest natural preservatives. Over cups of coffee, we had a play with words and sounds, and in the end we created a new word:
Soult / pronunciation salt / meaning to preserve, with soul
And with that, SOULT Journals came into being. Our vision is simple: To create journals that will capture a little of your soul and your story. Timeless keepsakes to preserve your story—forever. Not only for yourself, but for the generations to come.
Who we are, and what we believe
We are two mothers on a mission to help and inspire others to document their lives with beautiful, tangible keepsakes. We are light chasers. We are image makers. We are storytellers. We are memory keepers. We believe, with all our heart, that life is worth remembering and that it is never too early or too late to start documenting your story.
A graphic designer by trade, Ronnie owned and managed a commercial design studio for seven years before co-founding Life:Captured with Trish. Ronnie lives in the Northern Beaches, Sydney, with her husband, Rick, and five of her six little boys. She blogs at The Shoemaker's Daughter, a personal memoir named after her mother. An avid memory keeper, Ronnie loves organising her life to a tee. You can purchase her new book here, or follow her on Instagram here.
Trish is a mother of three, a believer, and a documenter of life through her lens. She has always had a soft spot for the old-fashioned and the tangible, and is constantly torn between the call of the slow life while being planted in this continually evolving digital age. A lover of dawn and dusk, piping-hot coffee, and contagious laughter—it’s always been the simple things that fill her cup and remind her, in all things, to be thankful. You can follow Trish on Instagram here.
How this journey began...
From casual meetings through friends of friends, it wasn’t until almost a decade later, when we met at a cafe to discuss a family photo shoot, that we realised how much we had in common (despite our very different personalities). Over cups of coffee (we like coffee), we discovered that we were both passionate about documenting life and that we shared a soft spot for the lasting nature of a tangible image—the printed as opposed to a digital file. It wasn't long before we dreamt up a memory-keeping workshop that we could teach together. And thus Life:Captured was born. From there, we started teaching classes online, created design templates, and published articles and stories that we hoped would inspire others in their memory-keeping endeavours.
As we sought to nurture and engage with our online community, we launched Life:Captured Project, created a new hashtag, and started sharing daily journaling prompts at the beginning of 2015. In the months that followed, we were overwhelmed with the positive feedback, and whenever we checked our online statistics, it was clear that our journaling prompts drew new visitors to our site almost every single day. We even found ourselves mentioned on popular sites like How Sweet Eats and Career Girl Daily.
Over time, we realised there was a gap in the market and we decided to translate our heartfelt prompts into beautiful, keepsake journals. And so, after hundreds of hours of work, here we are. Embarking on the next chapter of our journey...
When we first started drinking coffee together, we never anticipated that our journey would lead us into the world of paper and production. But now that we are heading down this path, we want to do it right. For us, this means caring not only about the end product but also about how our journals are made: from the sourcing of the raw materials to the environment in which the journals are produced. We have considered the impact our product may have on the environment, and we have chosen to be as kind as we can. We care about using recycled or recyclable materials where available, and reducing waste as much as possible. We care about the suppliers we work with. We care about the level of detail, care, and attention that goes into the making of our journals. We care about the quality and longevity of our product. We care about—and value—craftsmanship over economies of scale. We care about giving back to those in need, which is why we will contribute $3.00 from every journal sold to assist the work of CARE Australia. And ultimately, we care about you, and we want you to be confident that when you purchase one of our journals, you are supporting an honest business that has been crafted with both heart and soul. You can read more here about our commitment to making a difference in every way we can.
We want to grow, but we want to do so in a way and at a rate that is sustainable for our business partners and for our families. We already have plans for new journals, and we are excited about turning them into a reality. We want to keep asking ourselves the hard questions: How can we be doing this better? How can we be more transparent? How can we be more responsible?
But most importantly, we want to keep helping you to preserve your story.
It's bound to be a good one, because it's yours...
